What To Look For In A NYC Dental Implant Professional

The City That Never Sleeps is full of prime picture-taking opportunities, but if you are not happy with your smile, you are probably hiding from all of them. Instead of living life in black and white in New York City because your self-confidence has taken a hit with your lackluster smile, why not look into dental implants and get back to living in full color?

Dental implants are a permanent way to regain your confidence by improving your smile with prosthetic teeth that look and feel natural. If you have been thinking about dental implants to help you improve your lifestyle, here is everything you need to know to make your decision.

Some General Information on Dental Implants

Dental implants work like your natural teeth do in that they adhere permanently to your mouth and allow you to perform daily activities just like you would have with your regular teeth. They are made up of three parts that work together to seamlessly take the place of your missing or damaged tooth in an indistinguishable way from your natural teeth.

The way dental implants work is similar to natural teeth. Your natural tooth has a crown – the visible section encased in white enamel – and the root, which is attached to the nerve via the jawbone. The dental implant is the root and the replacement tooth is then attached to it, replacing one tooth, multiple teeth, or even all of your teeth if necessary. They can also be attached to dentures.

Because these implants are made from medical-grade materials, they are a great investment in your oral health. The implant itself is biocompatible titanium that fuses to your living bone in your jaw in a process called osseointegration. After it becomes fused to your jaw, it is unmovable, unlike with dentures and bridges. This means that your teeth are now yours to use as you choose.

There are three main parts to the dental implant: the fixture, the abutment, and the prosthetic. The fixture is the titanium bottom that is surgically implanted into your jaw and will eventually adhere to the jawbone. The abutment is the permanent connector that keeps your new tooth from moving around once it is adhered to the implant, and the prosthetic is what is considered the crown.

These three parts working cohesively together can last for decades if you take care of them as you would your own teeth.

Why So Many People Prefer Implants Over Other Options

Dentures, bridges, and crowns are common replacements for missing teeth, but they are temporary solutions to a problem that is not going away. Once you lose your teeth, they are gone for good, but these options are not permanent. You have to take out dentures and bridges for cleanings, and all of them can break at the most inopportune moments.

Dental implants, however, have many advantages, the main one being that they are permanent. They don’t have to -and can’t – be removed for cleanings, they won’t fall out if you eat something chewy or sticky, and they won’t break when you are traveling around New York City or anywhere else.

Other advantages of dental implants include:

  • The ease of use. Dentures are notoriously difficult to chew with and must be taken out and cleaned regularly. Dental implants fit, feel, and function just like your natural teeth and you don’t have to worry about what you are eating or be concerned that they may fly out when you are in the middle of a meeting or important event.
  • Food is no longer off-limits. Did you want that caramel apple? Or would you love to chew bubble gum again? Whatever off-limits food you once avoided for fear of hitting a nerve in your tooth and feeling pain or concern that you might pull your crown or denture out, you can now have it to your heart’s content! Living in NYC and not being able to eat is almost as painful as not being able to breathe for many people, but dental implants make this problem go away.
  • It’s a long-lasting investment in your health. Because the materials that make up dental implants are durable and resilient, you know that whatever the cost is it is going to be a long-term investment that pays for itself. The porcelain or zirconium that makes up the tooth is attractive, and the entire implant can stand up to regular daily chewing, long-term use, and even impact from jarring.
  • Dental implants can improve your bone structure. Without dental implants, your options are limited – you can either let your teeth deteriorate until they have to be pulled, or you can replace them with bridges, crowns, and dentures. When you choose these options, you end up having to have the health gum around your surrounding teeth removed to make way for a bridge. However, dental implants don’t require this excision of healthy tissue.

In addition, dental implants take away the weight from dentures and bridges that gradually erode away at your jawbone. They can preserve your current jawbone level and restore it over time, making dental implants a great way to avoid further deterioration and problems with your existing teeth and bone structure.

  • The success rate of implantations is a cool 97%. Nationwide Dental Implants only work with the top surgeons in the country, so if you are using a doctor that you connected with from us, you can have the peace of mind of knowing that you are in good hands.

The only concern is whether your body will reject or accept the implant, but with a 97% success rate over more than 70 years of dental implants, the odds are in your favor!

The Dental Implant Process – An Overview

There are four main stages in the dental implantation process that extend over a period of weeks or months, depending on how quickly your body heals the implant initially.

In the first stage, you meet with your surgeon and receive an examination that takes into account your oral and overall health. At that point, he or she will create a treatment plan for you that will include either a single-stage or a two-stage implant.

The second stage starts the action. Your titanium dental post will be surgically placed and then given time to heal. If your treatment plan was a single-stage procedure, a temporary abutment is also attached at the same time. In a two-stage procedure, the dental implant is left to be covered by gum tissue until the fusion to the bone is complete. It’s a process that can take weeks or months.

In the third stage, your body has healed, and the fusion is complete, so now the abutment and prosthesis can be attached. The abutment is screwed onto the implant through your gums and your prosthesis is then attached to the abutment.

Finally, your teeth are fitted to your mouth to perfection. You may require multiple visits before this happens, but your surgeon will work with you to adjust and tweak your implants as necessary until they feel natural. You should be able to use your teeth just as if they were your own by the time you finish stage four.

Beyond this stage, the rest of the care of your dental implants is up to you, just as it would be for your very own teeth. You will need to provide regular self-care and occasional annual maintenance depending on your dentist’s recommendations in order to give your investment the best longevity possible.
